Halfway there

This site specific work from 1978 integrates floor, walls and ceiling. Curved and flat surfaces of light and paper add angles and junctions within the existing space. Shadows become objects. Language exists formally, directing the reading and altering the surrounding space.

View of art installation by Myrel Chernick - 1970s

This abstract work from 1976 was created at the Whitney Museum Independent Study Program in the basement of an old bank building on Reade Street. The pieces were constructed from large sheets of paper, wooden or plexiglas dowels, spotlights and slide projections. The light explored and delineated the angles and planes of the space. Ethereal and impermanent, with light and shadow as integral components, each installation was photographed then dismantled.
